Shreveport Police said Ureka Black, 32, of Shreveport, threw her two young children from the Cross Lake Bridge into the water on Friday, September 24. Black was arrested over the Texas state border on Friday afternoon and returned to Caddo Parish over the weekend.
When Black allegedly threw her two children into the water, it resulted in the death of her 8-month-old son and injured his 5-year-old son. The 5-year-old was taken to Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, where he is recovering.
KTBS now reports that Black has a long arrest record, has spent time in jail, and has had court-ordered anger management and parenting classes.
The report says that Black was arrested 6 times in Caddo Parish and at least 5 times in Bossier Parish. The arrests include multiple charges of prostitution, multiple arrests for arson, trespassing, resisting arrest, assault, domestic violence, property damage, aggravated assault and battery, among other charges.
Black’s most recent arrest took place on charges of human trafficking and prostitution. KTBS reports this conviction:
“Upon her conviction, Black admitted to encouraging a youngster to prostitute herself. She was arrested in an attack which first led to the young girl’s arrest. Detectives then used this young girl to 17 years to get to Black.
According to investigation reports, the minor told assistant officers that a woman, whom she called “Girk”, contacted her and told her that the advertising she was using to solicit business was ill-conceived and offered to help him do it right. “Girk” promised that in a few months the minor “would drive nice cars, buy nice clothes and have more money than she ever needed,” the girl told officers.
Officers arranged for the girl to contact Black, who was later arrested. Black refused to answer officers’ questions and asked for a lawyer. Two cell phones were seized. “
In addition to this arrest for prostitution, Black was arrested three more times for prostitution, but it appears that only one of these arrests has been charged. In the case where she was prosecuted, she did not plead any dispute and was only sentenced to 6 months in prison, with a credit for the time served.
Black also faced a serious arson charge for setting fire to her ex-boyfriend’s house in 2010. The KTBS report says she broke into the ex-boyfriend’s house. boyfriend and set it on fire while her 2 year old daughter was with her. Black pleaded guilty to simple arson in this case and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. But that sentence was suspended and she was sentenced to 30 days in prison instead.
However, Black eventually violated her probation and ended up being sent back to jail for the 5-year sentence. However, she was released after only 9 months.
Currently, Black will face one count of second degree murder and one count of attempted second degree murder, for allegedly dumping his children in Cross Lake on Friday.
