As Bartlesville’s newest discount store prepared to open for the first time on Saturday morning, shoppers along the sidewalk were focused. Many had arrived as early as 7 a.m. to secure a spot in the queue and had researched days in advance, studying the store’s Facebook live feeds to map their straight line for specific items. .

When $ 5 Gold Diggers opened at 10 a.m., people flocked, scurrying down the aisles of white trash cans filled with a mix of unrelated items.

A Hoover vacuum, Project 62 decorative shelves, a toddler slide, a car seat – brand new, in its original packaging and only $ 5.

Store staff spent the last week preparing the new location, 520 SE Washington Blvd. – offloading the first shipments of overstock items from retailers like Target and Amazon and promoting the opening on Facebook.

Customers rummage through piles of merchandise where everything is just $ 5 at the $ 5 Gold Diggers grand opening on Saturday, September 25 in Bartlesville.

On Saturdays, the store gives tickets to the first 60 people in line to reserve their seats. Just half an hour before the store officially opened, co-owner David Harger said only 40 of the tickets had been handed out.

“(At the Tulsa location) usually by the time we get there we’re giving out 60 tickets like that,” Harger said with a snap of his fingers. “It will grow once people get the basics. Either they will come very early to be part of the first 60, or they will come at 10. ”

As 10 a.m. approached, the store line filled up and Harger announced that anyone who likes the $ 5 Gold Diggers Facebook page and registers on the app will receive a 5% store-wide discount. .

The goal of the staff is to empty the store every week to make room for new inventory. A special room, “The Vault,” offers big-ticket items that cost over $ 5, but are lower than the original prices.

Several families lining up for the inauguration said they had an eye for items related to the babies teased on the store’s Facebook photos.

Employees prevent customers from "the vault" who holds high-priced items individually until their number is called at the $ 5 Gold Diggers grand opening on Saturday, September 25 in Bartlesville.

Amber Evans and her daughter, who recently moved to Bartlesville from California, were looking for furniture for their new home and items for a new baby in the family.

They arrived at 7 a.m. and were surprised to score tickets for fourth and fifth places in a row.

“In California, we couldn’t have been in line. Honestly, we’re super excited, ”said Evans.

When the store finally opened, customers cried out to rummage through the overflowing bins of home decor, makeup, diapers, fitness equipment and more.

Within minutes, they requested additional baskets as the first ones filled up. When the carts ran out, staff started handing out large plastic bins for people to fill.

At 10:20 a.m., store staff brought in another pallet of inventory from the back to fill the bins.

Customers quickly filled in $ 5 Gold Diggers on Saturday, September 25 at its grand opening in Bartlesville.

Alesa Miller left the store with two carts full of decorations for Christmas and an upcoming wedding, as well as clothing and other sundries.

Recently, she decorated her home with finds from the Tulsa location – rugs, curtains, lamps, pillows, quilts and chairs, all from $ 5 Gold Diggers, she said.

“You kind of have to be open to maybe needing a few things and then just seeing what you can use,” Miller said. “It’s the best combination of Black Friday shopping, yard sales and gambling. … It’s the best of all possible worlds.

Sally Hulse and her daughter, Robin Slack, said they attended the opening of the experience.

Hulse said they mostly found themselves buying things they didn’t need, but that it “will be helpful” to have around.

“You have a sense of urgency because there are so many people shopping,” Slack said. “We have a mishmash of stuff. Clothes, canning jars – which, in fact, were on my list. “
